The lowdown
An inexperienced Hoops side did well in the first leg in what was a testing night up against an organised Midtjylland team.
The Glasgow outfit opened the scoring through new signing Liel Abada just before the break but things got tougher once Nir Bitton received a second yellow card for a tempestuous reaction to simulation from Midtjylland attacker Anders Dreyer.
The 10 men of Celtic battled on bravely, but keeper Vasilis Barkas could have arguably done better, as Brazilian Evander’s free-kick levelled the scores on 66 minutes.
This was on the whole an encouraging performance from the Old Firm club, who were down to the bare bones in terms of personnel in the build-up to the match and fielded a youthful centre-back pairing of Dane Murray and Stephen Welsh for the second half.
The duo, who have a combined age of only 39, impressed throughout with Welsh having the most touches, passes and highest passing accuracy on the pitch while Murray made some vital interceptions in a solid first competitive appearance.
Captain Scott McGregor had the honour of leading out the side in front of 9,000 fans at Celtic Park and was thrilled with the efforts of his teammates.
He said: “It was a good starting point, the boys gave everything, there was enough quality there and we controlled the game and we take that into next week and finish the job.
“We are still in the tie and we have another leg to do the business.”
The Hoops will be buoyed by the result on Tuesday night and now have the chance to steal a result on their travels.
However, a nervy night looks to be in store and if the Celtic back-line are in the same heroic form as the first leg, then it is difficult to see many goals in the tie.

With Midtjylland star man Frank Onyeka moving to Brentford the Hoops will be fancying their chances of edging out a functional, if not exceptional Midtjylland side.
Postecoglou’s task now will be to have his Celtic side fully prepared for the tie that will decide who will most likely face off against PSV in the next stage of the competition.
The former Australian manager was full of praise for his team’s first-leg efforts and promises to have his side in much better shape for the return leg.
He said: “We will be better prepared, no doubt. In fact, I don’t think we will ever be as badly prepared as we were going into such an important game and that’s on me.
“I haven’t done a great job so far to be honest because with the disruptions we’ve had, we haven’t been able to bring the players in.
“My role is to try and reinforce this squad and to try to prepare this squad for what is ahead, and to their credit, the players didn’t look for excuses tonight.
“They put in a solid shift and I’m just disappointed they didn’t get the rewards for what I thought was an outstanding performance.”
