A 3-0 victory over Livingston was a perfect start to the defence of their Scottish Premiership title but they will face a much tougher test in Sweden.

The lowdown

Malmo secured their place in the third qualifying round after seeing off HJK Helsinki last week.

Malmo had a scare when they conceded in the first minute but they did enough to secure a 2-2 second-leg draw in the Finnish capital to go through 4-3 on aggregate.

In the first round they were 1-0 winners at home to Riga of Latvia in the first leg before a 1-1 draw in the away leg saw them go through.

Domestically they are a point behind leaders Djurgaardens after 13 matches but have only dropped two points in six home games and will be full of confidence after winning their last three matches by an aggregate score of 11-0.

They are managed by former Newcastle striker Jon Dahl Tomasson, who took over in January last year and guided them to the Swedish title in his first season in charge.

There has been a lot to like about Rangers under Steven Gerrard though, and last season’s title triumph plus a run to the last 16 of the Europa League showed their capabilities.

We reckon they will back themselves to get the job done at Ibrox if they return on level terms and a draw at 9/4 is the first of our Malmo vs Rangers predictions.

Where the game will be won or lost

The main hope for Rangers is that this crucial match has not come too soon in the season for them.

While Malmo are halfway through their season in Sweden, Rangers only got up and running at the weekend and it was not quite a perfect start as they lost Ianis Hagi to injury after he scored the opener.

Hagi was left in space from an eighth-minute free-kick into the box before converting in style. However, he departed before half-time after being hurt in a foul by Adam Lewis.

Rangers could not keep up their early pace but substitutes Scott Wright and Kemar Roofe both finished following goalmouth scrambles in the final 12 minutes as the champions made it 20 consecutive home wins in the league.

Alfredo Morales could potentially return after an Instagram post suggested he has left hotel quarantine which was enforced following his return from South America.

His inclusion, even if only on the bench, would boost the attacking options available to Gerrard and we like both teams to score at 17/20 in the Malmo vs Rangers odds.

The former England captain was certainly satisfied with the performance of his team against Livingston, telling Rangers TV: “I am really happy with the performance for large parts. I thought we played with a lot of control.

“The subs brought class and quality, which is important again, and the team selection is right now. With an eye on Tuesday, a few have been offloaded and they will be ready to go, so I am pleased about that.”

Rangers were held to a 1-1 draw on their last trip to Malmo 10 years ago, which meant they missed out on the group stage having lost the first leg 1-0 at Ibrox.

This time we think the Light Blues would be pleased with the same outcome so another 1-1 draw at 6/1 completes our Malmo vs Rangers betting tips.
